Lilly has been baking and decorating cakes for more than three decades now. When she met-up and married Neil in 1992 she found that she could do far more, they set off on a cake making frenzy. During this time they have since had three kids and now that THEY are older, are finding themselves with too much time on their hands and far too many ideas in their heads.
Their styles do differ, while Lilly likes to stay with the more traditional styling of cake, Neil prefers the more abstract designs. They trained themselves in the cake world, with Lilly receiving training as a qualified cake decorator and Neil using his vast repertoire in artistic talents (as he likes to tell us all) and have approached every design challenge with aplomb, and to this day will sit with the customers or talk over the phone or the internet, if they wish, and discus with them through the idea so that they end-up with what they want. They rarely make the same cake twice! At times the customers will come up with a picture that they want Lilly and Neil to copy but they seldom do that and find that with a little discussion a new or similar design can be created. One client came to them with a wedding cake idea, traditional, round and black & white. In the end they left with a cake we called the ‘Vegas’ (found in the ‘Novelty Wedding’ section). Completely different but what was truly wanted.
The basic cake recipe is a closely guarded secret of Lilly’s. Even Neil does not know the ingredients or method. However it can be said that it tastes great and has brought customers back for baked cakes (plain and fruit) on many occasions.
We have a customer from Yorkshire who regularly orders in advance of visiting her family here in Croydon to take back with her. We also have customers in Ireland, Africa and America to name a few. Neil’s favourite customer at the moment is in North London who sends challenging ideas to him.
Working from home they have managed to mix their love of cakes and a family life from the very start but are soon to be expanding out. Watch this space...
